Belted Kingfisher - Ceryle alcyon - also known as Martin-pêcheur d’Amérique (French), Martín Pescador Norteño, Martín Pescador Migratorio, Martín Pescador Pasajero (Spanish).
It’s been a wonderful week around the water. This Belted Kingfisher is a lifer for me.
In the same mess of bids I found Lesser Scaups, Common Goldeneyes, Canvasbacks (a lifer), and a Ring-Necked Duck (a lifer). But this Belted Kingfisher was the highlight because he was so much bigger than I expected. I always pictured the Kingfisher as a small finch-sized bird, but in fact he is much larger - taller than 1′!
Photo taken with the Canon Digital Rebel XT / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens at Lindsay Park Yacht Club in Davenport, Iowa on March 5, 2008.
Congrats! The Kingfisher is one of my favorite birds. I’ve only seen one a few times, got a pic once by only from a distant. Great shot, I’m sure it was exciting to get an up close few of it.

Moe, great shot, not an easy bird to get a picture of at all, and this female looks great. Congrats on all the lifers.
