White-Crowned Sparrow - Zonotrichia leucophrys - also known as Le bruant à couronne blanche (French), Witkruingors (Dutch), Dachsammer (German), Passero corona bianca (Italian), and Chingolo Piquiblanco (Spanish).
Song Sparrow - Melospiza melodia - also known as Bruant chanteur (French), Zanggors (Dutch), Singammer (German), Passero cantore (Italian), and Chingolo Melodioso (Spanish).
This is the first time I have seen a White-Crowned Sparrow in my yard. The Song Sparrows have been here before, but there appears to be a pair hanging around a lot this Spring. In fact, I even saw one Song Sparrow peaking into my gourd birdhouse, although I do not think a Song Sparrow would nest in a gourd up in an apple tree.

Moe- Great white-crowned sparrow shots, we had one show up today in our yard, the first time we have observed this species at home. I then saw your picture and thought “what a coincidence” Great comparison shot- sparrow are certainly not just LBJ’s (little brown jobs)
I’ve never seen a white-crowned sparrow before! But, guess what I saw this past week in my yard? A male and female oriole!! They were pecking at bugs in the grass. I about had “the big one” when I saw them. I’ve NEVER seen orioles in town before. Woo hoo!

May 17th, 2008 at 6:52 amAhhh, I must confess - I have never seen an Oriole, although I have tried! That’s an awesome sighting to see a pair.
The White-Crowned seems to be everywhere in Iowa. This just happens to be the first time I have seen one in my yard.
