In the Leaf Beetle family of Beetles, the Northern Corn Rootworm resembles in shape, size and body structure its relative the Eleven-Spotted Cucumber Beetle (also known as the Southern Corn Rootworm). But where the Spotted Cucumber Beetle is yellow with dark spots, the Northern Corn Rootworm Beetle is solid lime green.
Like the Cucumber Beetle, the Northern Corn Rootworm can be a major agricultural pest. The larvae feed on the live roots of corn plants while the adults feed on the pollen and the silk clippings of adult corn plants, adversely affecting corn pollination.
I live very close to a number of corn fields, but had never seen this beetle until I planted sunflowers. These bugs were all over the sunflowers. This particular specimen, however, was inside a Day Lily, where I have also found a number of Cucumber Beetles this year.
