Red-Breasted Nuthatch - Sitta canadensis - also known as Der Kanadakleiber (German), La Sittelle à poitrine rousse (French), trepadeira-azul-do-canadá (Portuguese).
With a Black-Capped Chickadee. Not my favorite picture, but it has now been two years and I have not seen another, so this photo gets dusted off and posted in order to add it to my life list on the left sidebar. They are inhabitants of spruce and fir forests, and that is exactly where I found this guy. They use the resin from the trees to protect their nest cavity from predators.
Identification:
* Small nuthatch.
* Eyebrow white with black stripe through eye.
* Top of head black.
* Back gray.
* Underparts reddish.
* Climbs down trees headfirst.
Photo taken with the Canon Digital Rebel XT / 350D and a Sigma 70-300mm Lens on March 4, 2007 at Scott County Park, Scott County, Iowa.
Hey Moe - Did you see my pictures of the Rose-breasted grosbeak? I’d never seen one before, but he was very cooperative in letting me get some great pictures of him. Too cool!
Funny, I just saw my first one yesterday. I got two terrible pictures from far away before he flew off, but I have proof! Your pictures are much better.
