White-Crowned Sparrow - Zonotrichia leucophrys - also known as Le bruant à couronne blanche (French), Witkruingors (Dutch), Dachsammer (German), Passero corona bianca (Italian), and Chingolo Piquiblanco (Spanish).
As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts, Cornell lists the White-Crowned Sparrow as a Winter visitor to Iowa. However, I only see them in my yard in the Spring. Their arrival always seems to coincide with the arrival of Song Sparrows (and, this year, Chipping Sparrows).
The grayish upper-bill on this specimen does not appear to indicate anything, although their bills are usually yellow or pink.

What a beauty! All I seem to get are grey-capped house sparrows in my yard. Although there is a group of Baltimore Orioles hanging around this spring. Now, if they’d just hold still for a photo!
Gorgeous bird, great photograph. I’ve been busy photographing birds all weekend. I plan to post them this next week on my other blog, be sure to check them out. I look forward to seeing what other birds you come up with. I’ve never seen this species in my area before, although I know they are here.
