common merganser taking off 01
common merganser taking off 02

Common Merganser(Mergus merganse – also known as Goosander, Gänsesäger (German), la serreta grande (Spanish), le Grand Harle (French), lo smergo maggior (Italian), ferestrașul mare, ferăstrașul mare, bodârlăul cu ferăstrău (Romanian), and Storskrake (Swedish).

This is a male Common Merganser taking in the Mississippi River in Bettendorf, Iowa. While it is a low light shot, you can still see this is an adult male in breeding plumage. Mergansers have a crest on their head, but in the males it is usually slicked back. The body is white with a bit of pink viewable underneath the wings. Head and neck all black with an iridescent green gloss. Butt and tail are grey. The wings are white on the inner half, black on the outer half.
